he never stopped fighting, as president clinton said. never stopped fighting for those who had no power. so my book is not so much a story about his different commands, and it's not an official naval history. i leave that to the next generation of naval historians who will have is the access to those materials. this is really the portrait of a man and a character and his times, and i think there are lessons in this for leaders today and for young people today. and it's about courage of convictions, it's about a life of well lived. and there's men plenty of warts in here as well. no one is, obviously, walks on water, but the fact of the matter is that here's a man throughout his entire life, um, who challenged wrongs and tried to undo them on behalf of those who lacked the power. let me give you some broad contours of your life just to put this into context. he was born in san francisco in november of 1920. he grew up in california, and part of the research i went down there. those of you who ever have the opportunity to go to the museum

what has happened to spending since president clinton's balanced budget? it's gone up substantially. where has it gone up? in domestic discretionary accounts which are often the target of speeches like senator mcconnell's today? no. that is basically been flat lined when you take inflation into consideration. the dramatic growth in government spending since we were last in balance has been in two areas. one of those was in military spending. and i might add the reason it's grown dramatically is we've been at war in afghanistan and iraq. the president has extricated us from iraq and we are in the process of leaving afghanistan. but if you want to know why government spending has gone up so fast, there's about a 64% increase in military spending since the budget was last in balance. no increase in domestic discretionary spending when you take inflation into account. but 64% in military spending. that's why spending has gone up. and yet, when they suggest we'll cut spending in the sequester, people say you can't touch it. it's got to continue to grow. i quest

i envy his research trips and should ask him some time about his visit to bill clinton's blease put a bedroom. he turned his attention to the war of 1812 with his new book mr. and mrs. madison's war americas first couple in the second war for independence published by bloomsbury in the history book club selection of the month. most of us i suspect that a sort of school remembrance of the war f-18 paul, francis scott key and saving good george washington portrait and that's about. but of course it was a much more complicated affair on numerous fronts in the time of considerable political division. we wanted nothing to do with that war and what a fascinating and diverse cast of characters. chief among them was the diminutive and a brilliant james madison and his vivacious wife dolly. arguably the were america's first power couple. no doubt obama could learn much from james and dolley. perhaps they already have to read it as a pivotal moment in the nation's history as america besieged on all sides and sought to maintain its independence from forces seemingly huge to repel, but they did.

i remember, and this is back during the clinton administration, they were saying we've got to do something about restricting arms here in the united states. and after all, look at all the things that are happening with the drug cartels in mexico, in central america. where are they getting their weapons? from the united states of america. that was the justification for having gun treaty at that time. well, this isn't all that bad. we don't know the details of this yet, but we know that the draft, the treaty make seek to establish certain criteria to be met before we can sell it to other countries. we have a lot of friendly countries out there that we would like to sell to. although we all agree that a committed effort must be made to prevent terrorists and criminals from acquiring weapons, the treaty could undermine our foreign policy and national security strategy and infringe americans' second amendment rights. i know i'm not the only one who hears from people. maybe in oklahoma people are a little more sensitive to their second amendment rights. whatever the case is, i seem to be hearing
